I’m starting a new series of articles. It’s going to be a tough series. When I started doing #HOSHINKANRI in education, it came to my mind. Since that day, I’ve been constantly reading and researching. My new article series will be about #SOCIETY5.0. Of course, first I will provide you with comprehensive information on this subject.

The concept of Society 5.0 originated in Japan and was first officially used by the Japanese government in 2016. Japan’s Ministry of Science and Technology has adopted the “Society 5.0” concept to lead the country’s industrial transformation. This term emphasizes digital transformation to solve Japan’s current social and economic problems more effectively and respond to future challenges. Japan has started long-term Hoshin Kanri to prepare its people for the future.

Society 5.0 is an evolution beyond previous industrial revolutions (e.g., steam-powered machines, electrification, computer technology). This concept expands the digitalization and automation-focused approach of Industry 4.0 to a human-centered and sustainable perspective. Any approach that does not center on humans is not sustainable. Society 5.0 aims to integrate innovative solutions such as digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things to enhance human quality of life and solve societal problems. Therefore, there is a need for a change in goals.

Japan has adopted the Society 5.0 concept as a national strategic initiative and has taken various steps in policy and technology in this direction. Although other countries have developed similar concepts, Society 5.0 has particularly stood out with Japan’s leadership in this field and has attracted attention in other countries as well. Watching it not receive enough attention in our country except for a few articles worries not only me but also anyone sensitive. This concept can potentially have a global impact by providing a roadmap for integrating digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, to increase human quality of life and solve societal problems.

Society 1.0 – Hunter-gatherer society structure. People lived as hunters and gatherers for a long time. Archaeological excavations have provided clues to this period. The scarcity of needs for life brought equal living conditions among people. Over time, people discovered that they could cultivate some plants. This was the beginning of a new era.

Society 2.0 – Agricultural society. People began a new era by discovering agriculture. It is assumed that there was a period of 20,000 to 25,000 years between the birth of the first human and the transition to an agricultural society. It was a long process. Settlement life began. With settled life, the notion of land ownership emerged. The concept of nation and boundaries began to form. It lasted from around 13,000 BC to the 17th century AD.

Society 3.0 – Industrial Society. Industrialization began in the mid-17th century. Industrial 1.0, Industrial 2.0, and Industrial 3.0 indicate progress in this process. This rapid progress also brought high ego to humans. In a short time, two world wars and hundreds of wars, deaths, and massacres followed. Fear and the beliefs brought by fear peaked first. Then, especially in societies transitioning to Industry 3.0, it began to give way to justice and equality. In addition, among the changes brought about in social life by industrialization; separation of home and workplace as production moved to factories, increasing division of labor, changing urban structure due to factories, and the emergence of the bourgeoisie as an upper and respected segment of society are among them.

Society 4.0 – Information Society. With the discovery of the internet towards the end of the 19th century, the rapid spread of information was ensured. The power shifted from the one with the most factories to the one with the most knowledge. It revealed the fact that even unmanned, automation-based factories needed many knowledgeable people. With Society 4.0, economic information has gained importance. (The whole world needs finance and economy experts who understand the logic of the lean system.) Production has focused on electronic devices that create, use, and store information rather than material goods. The era of calculating the value of a good by weight has long passed. Industry 4.0 is a very critical turning point. If you notice, the time to leap has shortened very, very much.

Society 5.0 – …….. ……… A new future, which is centered on humans more than ever before and thinks about humans and their future, awaits us. I think it’s a big claim. I know. I can talk about it easily with anyone in any environment. Along with this, I especially foresee a significant decrease in birth rates and marriages. Society 5.0 will unite the real world with the virtual world we have created from our dreams. Borders, nations, and beliefs will lose their importance just like in Society 1.0. The critical point here is that the last war will be between the prepared and the unprepared. Unfortunately, the unprepared may perish in the darkness of ignorance and ignorance. Or, as a whole world, we may experience a sharp turn to Society 1.0. Imagine suddenly coming to the brink of a very deep abyss.

Lean Summit 2023 gains great importance in this regard. You know this summit was held under the theme “Identify problems, take ownership, solve, and create value.” The first step was taken. Now, I’m reaching out to you. Let’s name it first.

This model goes beyond the digital transformation brought about by Industry 4.0. Society 5.0 focuses on human-centered values and emphasizes how technology can be used more effectively in people’s daily lives. This means integrating technological developments such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data analysis into our daily lives. This integration has the potential to offer better services and solutions in sectors such as healthcare, education, transportation, and many more.

To elevate the Anatolian people to the level of Society 5.0, awareness-raising and education at the regional and local levels are important. Education programs on digital literacy, and access to and use of technology should be developed to reach wide segments of society. Additionally, it is important to integrate technological innovations concerning local culture and values and to use the rich potential of Anatolia by integrating technological developments locally. Supporting local initiatives in areas such as local economic development projects, sustainable agricultural practices, and energy efficiency solutions plays a key role in transitioning to Society 5.0.

Furthermore, adopting a participatory approach to involve all segments of society in this transformation process is important. By fostering collaboration between local leaders, civil society organizations, and the business community, solutions tailored to the needs of the community can be developed. This enables Anatolia to discover its potential, preserve local values, and achieve sustainable development using technological advancements. Society 5.0 offers a roadmap to improve the overall well-being of society and leave a more sustainable world for future generations as a whole.
